Family Photographer

Hi there!

I’m Irina, a face behind Irina Shender Photography

And this is my story…

I come from a very big family in one of the post Soviet countries – Belarus. My mum and dad fostered eight orphan kids so there were ten kids in the family. The economy in the country was very bad then so often we did not even have enough food for everybody. Of course, there was not much space for photography…

Everything changed when my siblings and I were hosted by Italian families through charity Chernobyl catastrophe relief programs. My Italian family kept inviting me for so many years that they have become my second mum and dad. They were the people who gave me my ( ALL MINE!) first point-and-shoot camera and allowed me to use it with no limits at all! They would also pay for all the prints!!! I think I was around 10 then, so needless to say, most prints were no good at all…but it gave me my first understanding of the light, posing and composition. My Italian family would recharge my camera as often as I wanted and when I was old enough they gave me my first digital camera, and then my first mirror camera.

Later at Uni I attended a photography club, participated in quite a few photo haunts, took pictures at all the family events and reunions, my friends happily posed for me too and so on. I used to think I was pretty good, very good…
My comfortable photography world shook when I decided to do some formal photography courses when my daughter was born. I knew the photos were good, but deep inside I wanted more…

What I discovered was that the depth of the photography knowledge is unending, and that you can probably spend your whole lifetime only in learning light and experimenting with it. And the there is also a very complex and intricate art of retouching, combining colours, posing, composition, working with people and so much more…

When COVID hit, it shook my world again… But then I thought I could turn my passion into work. And I still can’t believe at how happy I am to do what I love and call it my business.

Now I know what I love most is capturing genuine relationships, true emotions and the beauty of people’s personality. Because every person is beautiful. All the need is a little help to show it to the photographer ❤️
